Do you get the feeling of not being able to fit in, feeling like you can't relate to anyone? You are looking for a place to be yourself and feel comfortable. A person with a stammer would have experienced this, as well as the feeling of not having a voice, not being understood or heard.

There is a phrase "Experts by Experience" which couldn't be more accurate, being able to connect with those people can open up so much more.

So, what is community? It can be many things such as creating a group of people that are in the same boat as you. People that you feel can understand you and relate to you. It could also be a group of people who are there to support you, encourage you, and give you a space to feel safe. It can also give people fresh chances and make them feel less isolated and out of place.

What does it mean to me?

I am fortunate enough to be able to work in a community setting and be in a community with others who stammer. This process has humbled me and given me many more chances than I had a decade ago. I have friends across the country who stammer, and they are super inspiring and the bravery they all have is fantastic. From feeling isolated, alone, and weird, to feel inspired, empowered, confident, and 100% Leanne, my life was transformed by it, and it made me even more passionate about helping and assisting others.

Building up this charity in the short months has been a privilege and being part of a family and a team is exactly what Empowering Voices are. Being a mentor and supporting people like me makes me very proud. It's the best move I've made in a while.

If you have found your people, embrace it, and never pass up a chance to be part of a community.
